GMHBA team rolls up their sleeves for the Lifeblood Health Services Appeal

Geelong’s Lifeblood Donor Centre will receive a welcome boost as GMHBA staff roll up their sleeves to support the annual Health Services Blood Drive this week.

For 90 years, GMHBA has provided members and the community with private health insurance and exceptional health services.

The GMHBA Lifeblood Team is made up of staff from GMHBA’s Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Warrnambool and Portland locations, and encourages staff to make regular blood and plasma donations.

From April 1 to June 30 Lifeblood’s Health Services Blood Drive will unite health services across the country, with a goal of more than 10,520 donations. Healthcare workers who participate will receive a limited-edition bandage designed by Melbourne artist, Lisa Gorman.

GMHBA CEO David Greig said the organisation was proud to support staff to make a meaningful difference to the lives of people who depend on blood and plasma.

“Working in health services, we unfortunately hear too often about people who need blood products to survive, whether it’s in an emergency situation or to support ongoing care for chronic health conditions,” he said.

“We are really happy to support our staff to visit their local donor centre by providing leave and promoting the benefits of their contribution internally.”

In Geelong, 100 local people are needed to give blood and plasma every day, seven days a week. Each of these donations can save up to three lives.

Lifeblood spokesperson Stephanie Reynolds said people who work in the health sector, like those at GMBHA, truly understand the life-changing benefits of donated blood.

“People with cancer or blood disorders, trauma victims, surgery patients and women in childbirth are among those who require blood every day,” Stephanie said.

“That’s why we are incredibly grateful for every donation.

“With one in three people in Geelong needing blood or blood products in their lifetime, you never know when a donation may make a life-saving difference to you or someone you love.”
