How to pick the right SmartCare Extras cover for you
Start by choosing an $500, $1,000 or $1,500 annual limit that suits you and your budget, and consider the services you claim for the most.
Next, decide if you’d like an annual limit or a sub-limit for a slightly lower premium. Sub-limits are half the annual limit amount and doesn't apply to optical.
Combine your SmartCare Extras with an eligible hospital cover to unlock a separate optical limit and annual limit rollover#.
Get more when combined with hospital cover
Add an eligible hospital cover to unlock the benefits of SmartCare Boost Extras:

ClassicCare Extras
If you're after a more traditional extras setup with set benefits or percentage back, and individual limits, we've still got you covered with GMHBA ClassicCare Extras. You can easily compare our ClassicCare Mid Extras with set benefits or percentage back to our SmartCare Extras range to find what works best for you.
Frequently asked questions about extras cover
Extras cover is a type of private health insurance. It pays benefits towards health services you might use like dental, physio, optical and massage. Provided you’re covered for the relevant service, haven’t used all of your benefit limits and have served any relevant waiting periods at the time you receive the service, with private extras insurance, you’ll pay less out-of-pocket every time you use these services (up to your benefit limits).
When selecting extras cover, we offer a range of options designed to align with your budget and health requirements.
Our SmartCare Extras range provides flexibility, allowing you to choose a flexible limit that suits your needs while bundling popular services. With this range, you receive 60% back on main services and 100% back on preventative dental at any dental provider. This range extends from SmartCare Starter Extras, Everyday Extras and the more comprehensive SmartCare Complete Extras.
Alternatively, if you prefer a more traditional structure, our ClassicCare Extras is available, offering either set benefits or 65% back across services.
When you use a registered health service that’s covered by your policy, GMHBA will pay a benefit towards your treatment. You can usually claim this at the time of the appointment electronically, meaning you’ll just pay the difference – the “out-of-pocket” – to the provider. Or, if you pay the provider in full, the benefit can be paid straight into your nominated bank account when you submit your claim to GMHBA using the mobile app or your member area. View more information on how to make a claim.
That all depends on your lifestyle, health needs, and your budget. If you find yourself using common health services, like dental, physio and optical regularly it might make sense to take out extras cover to help make the treatment more affordable.
Of course. You can buy an extras-only cover and forgo hospital cover or vice versa. It’s entirely up to you and your personal circumstances. Extras-only policies are generally much cheaper, although keep in mind you won’t be covered for any hospital related treatment, and it won’t help to avoid the Medicare Levy Surcharge if you’re a high-income earner.
No, extras cover is not considered a deductible expense. However, by taking out extras cover, and depending on your annual income, you may be eligible to receive the Australian Government Rebate on private health insurance, as a premium reduction or a lump sum when you lodge your annual tax return.
Extras cover, by itself, will not exempt you from the Medicare Levy Surcharge if you are a high income earner. For that you’ll either need hospital cover, or combined hospital and extras cover. You can learn more about the Medicare Levy Surcharge over here.
^Price based on single, aged 30 living in VIC earning $101,000 or less (Base Tier Australian Government Rebate) and excludes any Lifetime Health Cover loading. Prices and displayed products can change if details vary.
*Preventative dental includes check-ups and cleans, excludes general & major dental and orthodontics. Must be with a recognised provider.
#Annual limit rollover excludes optical. Available after 12 months of continuous cover on SmartCare Boost Extras at the same level (Starter, Everyday or Complete). Unused eligible annual limits roll over on 1 January and expire after 12 months.
