Frequently Asked Questions
Healthscope has made the decision to terminate its contract with GMHBA. To clarify recent developments, we’ve outlined some key facts below:
- GMHBA is a not-for-profit health fund and, as a member of the Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA), has held contracts with Healthscope for many years.
- In February 2024, GMHBA renewed our contract with Healthscope. This contract included annual funding increases.
- Recently, Healthscope made public announcements claiming AHSA funds, including GMHBA, were not covering their fair share of hospital costs.
- Healthscope subsequently informed GMHBA, and other AHSA funds, of their intent to charge an additional hospital facility fee to our members.
- GMHBA opposed the introduction of this hospital facility fee as it would have increased out-of-pocket costs for our members and was not permitted under our contract.
- Healthscope gave notice of termination of its contract with GMHBA.
- GMHBA believes the rates we pay Healthscope in our current contract are fair and reasonable.
- GMHBA understands the pressures that private hospitals are under and have sought to balance their needs while being conscious of the potential impact on health insurance premiums and our members during a cost-of-living crisis.
The Australian Health Service Alliance (AHSA) represents a number of Registered Private Health Funds across Australia to negotiate contracts with private hospitals. They are a not-for profit organisation that exists to ensure represented insurers can offer the best value, high-quality health services possible, whenever and wherever patients need it. The AHSA is responsible for facilitating arrangements between hospitals, doctors and health service providers on behalf of its represented funds.
You can view the list of our participating private hospitals on our website. Please note that this list will include the Healthscope Group of Hospitals until 3 March 2025.
