Annual Limit Rollover

Boost your extras with hospital cover
Don't let your unused extras benefits disappear at the end of the year. Join GMHBA SmartCare Extras with eligible hospital cover* and maintain continuous cover for a minimum of 12 months, you get to rollover^ any unused extras limits into the next calendar year.
We call it "annual limit rollover" and instead of losing your unused extras limits for services like physio, dental, or chiro (unfortunately not optical), you get to carry them over into the next benefit year.
*Available when SmartCare Extras are combined with eligible hospital cover.
^Unused eligible annual limits roll over on January 1st and expire after 12 months.

Here's how it works
While most extras benefits reset on 1 January each year, and any unused limits vanish, our SmartCare Extras when combined with eligible hospital cover lets you hold onto your unused benefits (excluding optical).
After one full year with GMHBA SmartCare Extras and hospital cover your benefits reset on 1 January and if you haven't used all of your eligible extras in that year you will still be able to use them in the next year*.
*Available after 12 months of continuous cover on SmartCare Boost Extras at the same level (Starter, Everyday or Complete). Unused eligible annual limits roll over on 1 January and expire after 12 months. SmartCare Boost Extras available when combined with eligible hospital covers only. Waiting periods may apply.
Let’s break down some key details
What’s a Smart Limit?
A Smart Limit is an annual limit that you can choose how to spend across included services (such as general dental, physio, chiro and osteo) per person, per calendar year. Annual limits, including Smart Limits, reset and/or rollover on 1 January.
SmartCare Extras can be taken out with or without sub-limits. If you choose to have SmartCare Extras with sub-limits, you can claim up to a certain amount ($250, $500 or $750 depending on the level of cover) for each service up to your total Smart Limit.
Annual limit rollover eligibility
To be eligible for the annual limit rollover, you’ll need to hold continuous SmartCare Boost Extras cover at the same level (Starter, Everyday or Complete) for a minimum of 12 months. Eligible members can then have their unused annual limits for included extras services carried over into the next calendar year on 1 January and access these for a further 12 months.
Accessing unused limits
At the end of your benefit period on 31 December, if you are eligible for annual limit rollover (see above) and haven't used your full annual limit for an eligible service, the unused amount will "roll over" into the next calendar year. The current year’s annual limit must be reached first before you can access the remaining annual limit rolled over from the previous calendar year.
Accumulation (one year only)
It’s important to note that rolled-over benefits don't accumulate indefinitely. They combine with your new annual limits for the upcoming year, effectively giving you a higher total limit to use from 1 January to 31 December. Amounts rolled over from the previous year will not roll over again at the next limits reset date.
Usage priority
When you claim in a new year that has rolled-over limits, GMHBA will use your current year's annual limit first, and then access your rolled-over limit only once the current year's limit is exhausted.
Waiting periods
While your annual limits will reset on 1 January whether you are on SmartCare Extras or SmartCare Boost Extras, keep in mind that waiting periods still apply. For most GMHBA extras services, there's a 2-month waiting period, and for major dental, orthodontics and some other services it's 12 months. So, while you might have the "limit" available, you won't be able to claim for services until you've served the relevant waiting period. For more specific details about waiting periods, view the fact sheet for your cover.
Let's compare

- You start your GMHBA SmartCare Starter Extras cover (with no hospital cover) on 15 August 2025.
- In 2025 you only claim $200 for physiotherapy and nothing else.
- Your annual limits reset on 1 January 2026. Since you are on SmartCare Extras only (not including any hospital cover) and therefore do not have annual limit rollover as a Boost inclusion, there will be no rollover of your remaining $300.
- Your new $500 Smart Limit becomes available on 1 January 2026, but like most extras cover, the remaining $300 will not be available to use.
- Put simply, by including eligible hospital cover, you unlock more value for your SmartCare Extras.

- You start your GMHBA SmartCare Starter Boost Extras cover (combined with hospital) on 15 August 2025.
- You become eligible for annual limit rollover on 15 August 2026 after 12 months of continuous cover.
- Your annual Smart Limit for 2026 was $500. You claimed $150 for physiotherapy in 2026. You have $350 of your unused Smart Limit that can rollover at the next annual limits reset/rollover date.
- You receive your new annual Smart Limit of $500 on 1 January 2027 as well as your leftover $350 from 2026 which is added to your Smart Limit.
- Your total available Smart Limit for 2027 is now $850 ($500 for the 2027 calendar year + $350 rolled over from 2026).
- When you make a claim in 2027, your benefits will be deducted from the current year’s $500 Smart Limit first. Once this $500 Smart Limit is reached, any further benefits will be paid from the $350 rolled over from the previous year, providing you with more value and the flexibility to continue to use your extras.
