Couples Cover FAQs

Private health insurance is not one size fits all, the best level of cover for you and your partner will depend on your priorities, lifestyle and what you would like to be covered for.

You can compare your options online or chat with us directly for advice on what private health insurance policy is right for you.

Before comparing policies consider the needs of each partner to align on what you both want from your health insurance.

There are different types and levels of cover so it’s important to know your budget and what services you are looking to claim on. The cover you choose will determine how many different types of general treatments are covered.

Consider your future needs and determine if they need to be covered by your policy too.

The cost of your cover is dependent on your age and income. For couples, it may be cheaper to sign up to a joint cover rather than singles and here’s why:

Lifetime Health Cover Loading (LHC) - If you’re both over 30 and haven’t held health insurance holding individual policies means you will both incur the LHC loading. If you are on a couple or family policy, your loading is calculated as an average between the individual loading of the two adults so you may end up paying less.

Government Private Health Insurance Rebate - The rebate amount you’re entitled to is calculated based on your income. For singles, the means-tested threshold is $90,000 whereas for couples and families it’s $180,000. This means if you hold a couples cover you may be able to claim a bigger rebate from the government.

Children - As holders of a joint policy you may be able to add children to your cover at no extra cost.
