Couples Cover FAQs
Couples private health insurance is a personal choice and choosing a suitable cover will depend on both of your needs and the lifestyle you love to live. You can cover all the essentials with Basic Hospital or opt for premium cover for total peace of mind.
For active couples or those seeking that extra motivation to live a healthier lifestyle, choose one of our covers with AIA vitality and be rewarded where it matters.
It’s always best to compare health covers so you know you’re getting the most out of your cover. You can compare your options online or chat with us directly for advice on what private health insurance policy is right for you.
Before comparing policies consider the needs of each partner, from there you can align on what you both want from your health insurance.
For some that will mean comparing Hospital covers and getting peace of mind for things that Medicare can’t cover, including elective surgery or sporting injuries.
If health therapies like physio and remedial massage are part of your routine, or you want to save more on dental and optometry visits, you should compare our range of extras covers and start getting more back on your treatments.
Always consider your future needs and ensure they’ll be covered by your policy too. If you’re planning to start a family, look for policies or extras that will add peace of mind to your pregnancy experience.
The cost of your cover is dependent on your age and income. For couples, it may be cheaper to sign up to a joint cover rather than singles and here’s why:
Lifetime Health Cover Loading (LHC) - If you’re both over 30 and both will likely incur LHC it increases the cost of your policy over time. Holding individual policies means you will both incur this levy calculated seperately, whereas on a joint policy the LHC is automatically halved so you may end up paying less.
Government Private Health Insurance Rebate - The rebate amount your entitled to is calculated based on your income. For singles, the means-tested threshold is $90,000 whereas for couples and families it’s $180,000. This means if you hold a couples cover you may be able to claim a bigger rebate from the government.
Children - As holders of a joint policy you may be able to add children to your cover at no extra cost.
