Increasing students’ health knowledge

Throughout 2017, Healthy Heroes was delivered to 46 primary schools across the Geelong region, reaching 4,210 students. Geelong Cats players visited each school and spoke to the students about positive behaviours for each of the topics.

Teachers were invited to have their students complete a survey before and after the school visit to measure if there was a change in their knowledge in the key areas. The pre and post surveys completed by 453 students involved in the Healthy Heroes program revealed that all program objectives were reached. The objectives were to increase student knowledge by 10% in the four key areas.

Impressively, there was a 22% increase in students’ understanding of the amount of physical activity they should do each day and their understanding of the amount of fruit they should eat increased by 40% and knowledge of vegetable intake improved by 28%.

“One of my highlights was actually seeing two of the players from the Geelong Cats and learning about the foods that you’re supposed to eat and how to keep hydrated. I loved the healthy heroes so much and I appreciate them because they gave up a bit of their time to come to Fyans Park primary school thank you Geelong Cats!”- student from Fyans Park Primary School.

VicHealth Awards

In December 2017, the Healthy Heroes program was recognised as a finalist in the annual VicHealth Awards for promoting healthy eating. The VicHealth Awards recognises excellence in health promotion.
