What is included in general dental cover?

Why do I need dental cover?

Visiting the dentist can be expensive, so for some people having the peace of mind to know dental cover is there if they need it can be important. More than half of us are visiting a dentist twice a year, so it can be worthwhile to find the best health insurance that allows you to claim benefits for those visits.

General dental cover is usually included in extras policies, alongside major dental cover, and other treatments and services like physiotherapy, optical and chiropractic. General dental cover can cover you for treatments like check-ups, cleaning, simple extractions and minor fillings. In fact, GMHBA’s general dental cover includes preventative services, which can help prevent larger problems further down the track.

Major dental includes cover for things like dentures, crowns, bridgework and surgical extractions.

Orthodontic treatments are usually not covered under general or major dental cover, but are included separately in other GMHBA extras covers.

What is included in preventative dental cover?

At GMHBA we encourage you to make use of the preventative dental benefits in our best health insurance plans. Our three extras policies – Gold, Silver and Bronze – all include preventative dental benefits. Preventative treatments covered under our general dental cover include diagnostic services like plaque removal.

We also want to make it easier for you to go to the dentist if you have our general dental cover, you can access up to two periodic examinations per calendar year in our cover. If you take our general dental cover you may also be able to claim three plaque removals each year and benefit from fluoride treatments as well. Waiting lists of two months apply to these treatments and there are annual limits you can claim each year, or set benefits, for some services. Benefits will vary depending on your level of cover. How do you know we are serious about preventative care? Our family packages offer 100% back on preventative dental.

Which cover is best for me?

General dental cover is included in a lot of extras policies, so choosing the best health insurance plan can come down to the level of cover you are after. If you want peace of mind when it comes to general dental cover, then the best health insurance option for you could be a higher level of cover, which usually includes higher or set benefits and higher annual limits for general dental. Annual limits are the maximum a health fund will pay, either per person or per family, each calendar year for specific treatments.

Our Gold, Silver and Bronze extras covers all offer general dental cover, as do our Family packages, so take a look at what they all offer and work out whether that fits in with your needs, wants and expectations.

Ensure you are taking the future into account when making decisions about the best health insurance for you. If you are planning to have children, or more children, take that into account.

General dental cover might not be enough if you have a family, given the amount of times they may need to see a dentist, and the different procedures they may require, for example wisdom teeth removal.

That could also be the case for senior customers. Dentures and crowns are usually covered under major dental, but it can be a good idea to ensure general dental cover is still on your list.

If you are young, then you might benefit from our cheaper insurance plans. Our Bronze Extras include general dental, not major dental, which can be a good money-saver if your oral health is good.

In fact, when it comes to finding the best health insurance plan, making the final choice could probably come down to other extras treatments, not just general dental cover. While general dental cover is the most claimed extras treatment in Australia, and is clearly a big reason behind people choosing to take out extras cover, other treatments and services must also be considered.

That is where our online quote process can be a real benefit. The further you go into the process, the closer you will be to choosing your best health insurance plan. Each decision you make will customise your available options and make your choices easier.
