When switching extras plans, how do I know what the best extras policy for me?

Why and how to switch

There can be many reasons to look for the best extras plan to switch to. You may be unhappy with the customer service of your current fund, or the benefit levels of their extras covers. You might be looking for the best extras plan to switch to for a better deal, or larger annual limits. Maybe you are looking for better premiums, or a not-for-profit health fund that is interested in using profits to benefit members, not its shareholders. Maybe finding the best extras plan to switch to is about finding a health fund that gives back to the community and promotes wellbeing and innovation. Perhaps you are looking for flexibility and choice in your extras plans. Whatever your reason, it can be quite easy to switch your plans to something that suits you.

The important thing is to spend time finding the best extras plan to switch to. Once you have worked out why your current plan isn’t working for you, it can be important to take stock of what you want in an extras cover. Think about your current lifestyle and come to an understanding about what extras treatments and services you might want in the next year or so, and workout what treatments and services you have been using frequently with your previous cover. If you have children, an extras plan with good general dental benefits and annual limits might be what you are looking for. If your children are older, then a comprehensive orthodontic plan might be worthwhile. If you play sport, look for a cover that includes good physiotherapy or remedial massage benefits. All these questions can make it easier to find the best extras plan to switch to.

What is the best extras plan to switch to?

The first thing to know when searching for the best extras plan to switch to is that waiting periods are unlikely to change. Health funds may have special offers on from time to time and may waive waiting periods for a little while, but as a general rule, most waiting periods with most funds can be very similar. The first place to start is by viewing our covers. We ask you a few simple questions that can help us filter out the best policy options. This can narrow down the choices for you, and still allow you to see the best options. GMHBA has three main extras options – Gold, Silver and Bronze. Each one is a different level of cover and each one offers different benefits. But the flexibility doesn’t end there.  Our extras covers also offer set benefits, which can lower the prices of the premiums and let you know exactly what you can claim for each treatment and services. There is also a percentage back option to give you certainty when you claim up to annual limits, our Gold extras cover offers benefits of 75%, our Silver 65% and our Bronze 55%.

That can still leave you with a little bit to pay, but it can be a lot less than having to pay for the whole treatment. With most extras covers not being covered by Medicare, finding the best extras plan to switch to can help your weekly budget if you need to find money for urgent treatment. This can be especially important for things like dental treatment, which can be expensive, and toothaches can be painful. Another point of difference that may help you find the best extras plan to switch to is annual limits. Annual limits can vary with different levels of cover and are a cap on the amount you can claim in benefits for a calendar year. They also vary with treatments or services, and the size of some annual limits can depend on how long you have been with a health fund.

How to switch

It is easy to make the switch to GMHBA. Once you have found the best extras plan to switch to, sign up. You can do this by giving us a call, signing up online or coming into one of our branches. We can take it from there. All you need to do is let us know the name of your previous fund, the type of cover you had, and your membership number. There is no need to contact your previous fund, and we can do all the paperwork for you. We can make sure you have continuity of care, but if you choose one of our extras covers within 30 days of your old cover ceasing, and you take out the same level of cover or less, you won’t have to re-serve any of your existing waiting periods.

If you come over to us immediately on equal or lesser cover, you won’t have to re-serve your waiting periods again, and whatever waiting periods you have served with your previous fund will also be transferred. We can also adjust your benefits accordingly. And if you change your mind in the first 60 days, we will give you your money back, if you haven’t lodged claim. As soon as we have all the information we can process what’s called a Transfer Certificate straight away. Once you have chosen one of our policies as the best extras plan to switch to, we can offer you a discount, simply by choosing to pay by direct debit.
