What is the best value health insurance for me?

Why do I need hospital cover?

Australia’s health system is lauded throughout the world. Medicare is part of what makes Australia great, and our universal hospital cover can make other countries envious. However, our public hospitals can be busy and congested. If we need emergency care, we know we can be seen when we need to be. But when it comes to elective treatments and services, our public hospital waiting lists can be frustrating. Finding the best value hospital cover for you and your family can give you peace of mind and choice when it comes to hospital care and treatment.

Private health insurance can cover you when you are admitted to a private hospital, or to a public hospital as a private patient. Being admitted to a private hospital can help you avoid the public waiting lists, and can even allow you to be seen by a doctor or specialist of your choice. Some health funds, including GMHBA, have a list of hospitals to choose from, which can allow you to find one convenient to you and your family. Finding the best value hospital cover for you can mean knowing you are covered for your current and future needs. It can also help you be proactive about your health. Being able to book in to repair minor ailments before they can have a greater influence on your overall health can be a positive. As can having access to programs that can help you cope better with the first few months as a new parent, or assist with rehabilitation within the privacy of your own home. At the end of the day, health funds can work alongside Medicare and the public health system to help you find the best value hospital cover for you.

How do I measure value?

So, how do you go about finding the best value hospital cover for you? The first thing to do is to take a close look at your own health. Understanding the practicalities of what level of cover you might need can help when it comes to choosing the right one. Speak with you doctor, look at your health, the health of your family, and even your family’s medical history to gain an understanding of what treatments you may be likely to use in the medium term. From there, finding the best value hospital cover for you can mean understanding what you expect from private health insurance. Would you prefer a single room to recover in, are you happy with being admitted to a public hospital only or would you like the option for peace and quiet of a private hospital?  From there, take a look at your lifestyle. Do you play contact or ball sports? Are you a regular runner or rider? If so, are you prepared to wait for a spot to open up in the public system to fix your knee, ankle or teeth? All these questions can help paint a picture of what level of hospital cover you are after.

The next step in finding best value hospital cover for you is to understand your budget. How much are you willing to pay? Does the peace of mind of knowing you can be covered if you really need it outweigh any costs? Will you suffer a financial loss if you are forced to stay home from work while waiting for elective surgery in a public hospital? It can be important in all of this to understand that just because a health cover is cheap, it doesn’t mean it is inferior or not right for you. And finding the best value hospital cover for you also doesn’t have to mean finding the most expensive option. Being covered to a level you many never need may not be of value to you.

What plans can give me the value I want?

Your search to find the best value hospital cover for you can start and end at GMHBA. We have three main hospital covers that are aimed at all levels of budgets. Our Gold hospital cover is our most comprehensive and is aimed at your total peace of mind. It comes with options to include or exclude pregnancy related services, to reduce premiums and increase flexibility. Our Silver Hospital Plus cover is a moderate level of cover and can be a good option as part of the search for the best value hospital cover for you and your family. It can cover you for common treatments in a private hospital, and excludes some treatments and services, which can help reduce premiums.

Our final main hospital plan is our Bronze cover. Bronze is an affordable and basic policy that can provide some cover in a public hospital as a private patient. All our hospital plans can represent different levels of value, based on your health cover expectations, needs and wants. At GMHBA we are determined to provide covers that are flexible. Flexibility can go a long way to determining the best value hospital cover for you. An example of that in our plans is with our excess options. Excess lets members share some of the cost of hospital admissions, in return for lower premiums. Like most kinds of insurance, an excess is deducted from the full benefit paid by the health fund. At GMHBA we give you choice when it comes to excess.

You can choose from excesses of either $500, $250 or $0. The premium costs of your policy will adjust accordingly, and you will only have to pay excess once in a calendar year, if your claim is higher than the excess. That means if you are admitted to hospital multiple times in a calendar year, you might only have to pay excess once. Once you look at your health, your finances, your lifestyle and your expectations, you should be ready to view our covers to find the best value hospital cover for you. Answer a few questions along the way and we can filter our cover options to find the right options for you and your family.
