Pharmaceutical costs with Hospital Cover

Hospital cover includes cover for medications provided to members pertaining to the admission while they are admitted as an inpatient in a hospital or medical facility. These costs are covered as part of your stay. Upon discharge, if provided with medication, these costs may be covered by your health insurer. Members are covered for most pharmaceutical items including PBS gap items that are used for inpatient services.

Best extras cover for Pharmaceutical costs

Pharmaceutical costs can often be included in the range of extras cover. Extras covers members for prescription items that have not received any Government Funding Scheme including the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (provided their usage is approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and they are not on the exclusion list).

Often if you have extras with a private health insurance company which includes pharmaceutical you are entitled to claim medications that meet the following requirements:

  • Category S4 or S8 items
  • Prescribed by an Australian registered medical practitioner dentist or nurse
  • Supplied by a registered pharmacist
  • Approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for sale within Australia
  • It is not on the Private Health Insurance funds exclusion list
  • The medication is not supplied under or funded by a public agreement or scheme
  • All waiting periods are served and the membership payments are up-to-date.
