How does couples cover work?

There are generally two types of health insurance in Australia – hospital and extras. Hospital can cover you for any admissions to hospital, either for accidents, injuries or elective treatments or surgery. We are lucky in Australia to have access to a public health system that is the envy of the world. We know that in an emergency situation we will be cared for, whether we have the best health insurance plan for couples or not. But what happens next? What happens if we need follow-up admissions, subsequent surgeries or specialist care? Private health cover can work alongside the public health system to give you choice and flexibility when you need hospital treatment.

Having access to the best health insurance plan for couples means you can choose your doctor or surgeon and you can choose to be treated in a private hospital, to avoid public hospital waiting lists. Depending on your level of cover, if you choose a private hospital, you could be covered for your accommodation costs, theatre fees and doctors’ fees. All health funds have an excess for their hospital cover, but the good news is you will only have to pay that once a year, no matter how many times you end up in hospital. You can also choose to increase your excess, which can reduce the level of your premium, which is your yearly cost of cover. Being able to choose your doctor can be very important, especially if you are planning to have a baby. When you choose the best health insurance plan for couples, you can choose your obstetrician, and stick with them throughout. When it comes to hospital cover, the best health insurance plan for couples can also include cover for assisted reproductive services, such as IVF, but only when admitted as an inpatient in hospital. This usually means the actual day stay procedures for embryo collection and embryo transfer. IVF can also involve a number of consultations, tests, and services outside of hospital. Many of these costs are covered by Medicare, however if considering IVF, you should discuss the potential costs with your provider. At GMHBA, we have three hospital covers – Gold Silver and Bronze. Different levels of cover can give you access to different treatments, and we have designed our policies to cater for every budget.

Extras cover is also an important part of finding the best health insurance plan for couples. Extras covers you for all those treatments and services you usually don’t have to go to hospital for, like dental, physio, chiropractic and optical. Whether you are single, part of a family or a couple, having a cover that can provide benefits for these treatments can come in handy. We also have three main extras covers, also called Gold, Silver and Bronze. They can allow you flexibility by providing benefits for different treatments, and providing you with different levels of benefits and annual limits. Our Gold cover, for example, provides benefits of 75% for treatments. That means if a dentist or a physio charges you $100, you can claim $75 back, providing your cover is up to date and you haven’t hit your annual limit and you have served your waiting periods. Annual limits are a cap on how much you can claim on individual treatments in a calendar year.

Check out the incentives

Cost is also a consideration when choosing the best health insurance plan for couples. While premiums can be different what is uniform is the Federal Government’s desire to see as many people take up health cover as possible. They offer a series of rebates and tax incentives to make it easier financially for people to take out cover. One of those is Lifetime Health Cover loading.

This is a scheme to encourage people to take out health insurance earlier in life. If you take out hospital cover before the age of 30 and continue to keep it, you pay the lowest base rate. However, if you do not have private health insurance after the 31st of July after your 31st birthday you are penalised with a 2% age loading on hospital component of your cover each year.

When considering the best health insurance plan for couples you need to take into account the current Medicare Levy Surcharge threshold for couples, which is currently $180,000. This means that if you have a combined income of $180,000 and you do not have hospital cover you will be charged between 1%-1.5% in extra tax each year. However, if you have health cover, you may not have to pay the MLS.
