Private health insurance can help with your overall well being, and financially it makes sense. Here are some reasons why you should get private health insurance:
Financial protection
Medical bills can be expensive. Private health insurance offers you peace of mind. As an example, last year we paid almost $45,000 towards a cardiac procedure for one of our members aged just 40.
Pay less after you turn 31
By taking out hospital cover before the 1st of July after your 31st birthday you'll avoid paying a higher premium. If you join health insurance, you'll pay an extra 2% on the premium for every year you don't have health insurance after you turn 30, up to a total of 70%. See the Lifetime Health Cover loading page for more information.
Additional benefits
Take out combined hospital and extras and you will be eligible for GMHBA's member loyalty program, Connect Rewards Plus. You will receive Connect Rewards Plus dollars according to your level of hospital cover and length of time you have been with GMHBA. You can use your rewards dollars to top up selected extras services, pay a hospital excess or reduce inpatient medical gap. See the Connect Rewards Plus page for more information.
Save tax!
If your taxable income exceeds $77,000 per year as a single or $154,000 for families, couples and single parents, you will pay an additional 1% of your income if you don't hold eligible hospital cover. So avoid the Medicare levy surcharge and it may even cost you less to enjoy the benefits of private hospital cover. See the Medicare Levy Surcharge page for more information.
30% or more off
Provided you have full Medicare eligibility, you can pay 30% to 40% less on your premiums with the Private Health Members’ Rebate. Take a look at how the Private Health Members' Rebate is calculated on the Payment and Claiming Options page.
A healthier future
Whether you play sport, visit the dentist, wear glasses, need treatment for aches and pains, are planning a family or just want peace of mind – GMHBA can minimise disruptions so you can enjoy a healthy future.
